Pasifika Futures once again was pleased to be able to lend support through sponsorship of the Wellington Samoa Rugby Union fundraising dinner held in Hataitai, Wellington on the 27th July 2017.
Popular Pacific comedian Tofiga Fepuleai played MC for the night while Rugby World Cup winning coach Sir Graham Henry impressed guests with his attendance and participation.
The Wellington Samoa Rugby Union fundraising dinner is held with all funds raised going towards the costs of running three representative teams: Senior Men, Senior Women (introduced 2015) and U18 School Boys. All teams have seen great success with the Senior Men coming second in the Hurricanes Development programme 2016, the U18 School Boys comfortably winning the Hurricanes Youth Council U18 Competition and the Senior Women competing at an NPC level.
“This year we are implanting a mentoring program for our rugby players between the age of 18 and 24” Wellington Samoa Rugby Club’s President Ken Ah Kuoi announced.
This youth leadership programme is one of WSRU’s new initiatives and will look at providing a platform that will introduce youth to other career options outside of rugby by assessing and supporting their skills off the field. This includes informing and supporting Youth to make positive, healthy choices to lead a prosperous life as well as a focus on the recognition and embrace of Samoan culture.
“The objective is to help our young players to be strong, confident and well-rounded people” says Mr. Ah Kuoi. This embodies the clubs vision to represent the Samoan community while also making an impact and contribution to the Wellington Rugby Union scene.
The Wellington Samoa Rugby Union Club also plan on hosting National Samoa 10s, projected for Labour weekend this year at the Jerry Collins Stadium, Porirua. For more information on WSRU available at www.wsru.nz
