The Pasifika Medical Association (PMA) Group joins Aotearoa New Zealand in expressing their heartfelt condolences to the family of the Maaori King, Kiingi Tuuheitia Pootatau Te Wherowhero VII, who peacefully passed away at the age of 69 last week. Thousands have gathered at Tuurangawaewae Marae to pay their respects to the Kiingitanga, including guests from around the Pacific region, remembering him for his legacy of social justice and advocacy.

The legal field may seem distant and unattainable for many Pacific youth, particularly those from low-decile schools. The MALOSI Project, a law-focused outreach programme run by Pacific law students at the University of Auckland, is dedicated to changing that perception. By going directly into schools with a high percentage of Pacific students, MALOSI is not only encouraging these young minds to consider university but also equipping them with the confidence and resources to make that dream a reality.

In light of Tongan Language Week, we highlight the Aotearoa Tongan Health Workers Association (ATHWA) who was recognised with the Core Performance Award at the Pasifika Futures (PFL) Whānau Ora Conference, a testament to their dedication to excellence and the well-being of Tongan families. The Pasifika Medical Association’s (PMA) Knowledge Hub Micro-credential course, developed in partnership with the University of Auckland, has successfully graduated its first cohort, with a second group already underway. Among the inaugural group was Resitara Apa, a community health Navigator for Pasifika Futures (PFL) partner, F’INE Pasifika Aotearoa Trust. In a recent interview for 531 PI’s Pacific Mornings show, Apa shared that the course was transformative, teaching participants to understand not just healthcare, but also themselves and their cultural journeys.

The Pasifika Futures Limited (PFL) 2024 Roadshow wrapped up its journey at Tokoroa, the 16th island of the Cook Islands. The visit began at Tokoroa High School, where a lively market day showcased student talents through music, food, and vibrant colours. The event concluded with impressive Cook Islands performances.

The 2024 Pasifika Futures (PFL) Whānau Ora Conference marked a significant milestone for the Whānau Ora programme, highlighting ten years of impact in New Zealand. Bringing together over 200 PFL partners and families from around the country to Due Drop Events Centre in Auckland last week, the conference shone a spotlight on stories across PFL’s five domains: succeeding in education, living longer living better, community connection, financial freedom and family resilience.

Day two of the Pasifika Futures (PFL) Whānau Ora Conference has kicked off, with Minister of Whānau Ora, Hon. Tama Potaka, delivering the first keynote speech of the day. He began his address by emphasising the importance of spiritual health and wellbeing, particularly acknowledging the cultural practice of starting with karakia (prayer) and PFL Board Director, Sir Michael Jones’ decision not to play rugby on Sundays.
