"For ATHWA to be recognised with the Core Performance Award for Whānau Ora signifies several important elements," said Makahokovalu Pailate, CEO of ATHWA.
"Firstly, it validates both our commitment to achieving operational excellence in service delivery and the impact of the positive outcomes through the work that we do which focus on the holistic well-being of the families we serve."
The collaboration between ATHWA and PFL has been instrumental in driving better outcomes in areas such as health, education, economic stability, cultural preservation, and resilience in the face of natural disasters. Pailate emphasised the importance of the partnership.
"It highlights the collaborative efforts between ATHWA and PFL which reinforces the importance of partnerships in achieving better outcomes for Pacific families and communities."
Looking ahead, ATHWA has set ambitious goals to further strengthen its impact, including community development, health and aging well, emergency response, sustainability, and advocacy. These priorities are underpinned by a deep respect for Tongan culture, which is central to ATHWA's vision and operations.
"We are privileged at ATHWA as all our staff are Tongans and all are bilingual. We speak both Tongan and English at work daily. Tongan culture significantly influences ATHWA's vision and operations in several ways.”
Pailate explains the importance of maintaining their values whether it be from community orientation to the respect for elders, cultural traditions, and the use of the Tongan language in outreach efforts, also highlighting the organisation’s focus on holistic well-being, cultural celebrations, and empowering the next generation.
“By integrating these cultural elements into our Vision and operations, ATHWA can effectively serve the Tongan and broader Pacific communities, ensuring that our services are not only effective but also culturally sensitive and relevant.”
