As Fiji Language Week comes to a close, we highlight our Fijian staff members who continue to embrace this year's theme of ‘Vakamareqeta na Vosa Vakaviti - Nurture and sustain the Fijian language.’

In 2005, Akinesi (Nesi) and Api embarked on a journey from the shores of Fiji to the landscapes of New Zealand. Guided by their deep faith and commitment to community, joined Youth With A Mission Marine Reach, operating a ship that carries out various missions. This transition came with significant challenges, particularly the loss of familiar communal support. With determination and support from Pasifika Futures partner, Pacific Islands Community Trust (PICT) Tauranga, they have crafted a remarkable success story.

Aotearoa Tongan Health Workers Association (ATHWA), a Pasifika Futures partner, are proactively creating positive shifts in mental health education with their Pacific Dementia Māngalo Workshop. Taking place during New Zealand’s 2024 Mental Health Awareness Week (MHAW), the workshop takes a community approach, opening the space to those diagnosed with dementia, those who may be supporting family members, and those who may seek further education around the topic.

The legal field may seem distant and unattainable for many Pacific youth, particularly those from low-decile schools. The MALOSI Project, a law-focused outreach programme run by Pacific law students at the University of Auckland, is dedicated to changing that perception. By going directly into schools with a high percentage of Pacific students, MALOSI is not only encouraging these young minds to consider university but also equipping them with the confidence and resources to make that dream a reality.

In light of Tongan Language Week, we highlight the Aotearoa Tongan Health Workers Association (ATHWA) who was recognised with the Core Performance Award at the Pasifika Futures (PFL) Whānau Ora Conference, a testament to their dedication to excellence and the well-being of Tongan families. This accolade is not just an acknowledgment of ATHWA’s hard work, but also a reflection of the successful partnership with PFL, which has been pivotal in delivering essential services to the Tongan community.

In a celebration of community spirit and cultural innovation, Kuki Learning was honoured with the Commissioning for Communities Performance Award by Pasifika Futures. This distinguished award recognises exceptional efforts by a community group or initiative in giving back to their local community through innovation and cultural connectedness.

Vave Hifo is a Health Coach at Etu Pasifika Auckland, dedicated to guiding patients on their path to better health. Vave's own journey is one of transformation, having endured a life marked by hardship and grief. As we celebrate ten years of Whānau Ora, Vave opens up about his journey of triumph and the invaluable support he received from the Whānau Ora service. Pasifika Futures Limited (PFL) brought together over 150 enthusiastic youth for an exciting roadshow. Held at Pasifika Medical Association head office, Fale Mama, sports teams, PFL partners, and students from Otahuhu College and Tamaki College participated in a youth focused evening.

In a compelling demonstration of community spirit and shared aspirations, the Pasifika Futures Limited (PFL) Roadshow recently made a significant impact in Auckland, leaving a legacy of inspired minds and empowered families. Hosted at the Pasifika Medical Association Head Office, Fale Maama, the event represented a pivotal occasion for nurturing intergenerational dialogue and fostering innovation within the Pacific community.

Over 150 members of the Hamilton community gathered at the K’Aute Fale on a chilly evening. This session marked the second gathering in the North Island, featuring lively group discussions and open floor sessions.

The Pasifika Futures roadshow resumed in Wellington, marking the start of our talanoa sessions in the North Island. The event saw a significant turnout, with meaningful and purposeful discussions throughout the evening.

The PFL Roadshow for the South Island concluded its journey in Christchurch, where a large and diverse gathering of Pacific families came together. The event drew people of various Pacific backgrounds and all age groups, eager to participate in a talanoa about their dreams and goals for the Pacific community in the Canterbury Region.
