Ōtāhuhu College returns to rowing after 50 years
Updates / Community , 22 Jan 25
After 50 long years, Ōtāhuhu College is back making waves in the rowing world, and leading the charge is former UCLA rower, Lanea Tuiasosopo. Through the Pasifika Futures (PFL) Sports Strategy, the Pasifika Medical Association (PMA) donated brand-new uniforms for the team as the students prepared for the Blue Lakes Rowing Regatta in Rotorua, which took place over the weekend; Ōtāhuhu College was the only public South Auckland school participating.

Now living in Auckland, Lanea found herself one day out on the water trying waka ama when she spotted the students rowing nearby. She later reached out to Ōtāhuhu College, offering to volunteer with the team, eventually leading to becoming the head coach of the school’s rowing program.

For Lanea, the team represents something much bigger than just sport.

"You look around and there's not much diversity. And when I saw this [the students], I think it was just a beacon of hope. There are some kids who really love this and people who support them, and I want to be a part of this in any way I can."

The team recently visited Rowing New Zealand’s headquarters at Lake Karāpiro, where the students were given a tour some of New Zealand’s Olympic rowing heroes. It was a chance for the team to learn from the best, hear stories of triumph, and be inspired to dream bigger.

For the students, the visit was a moment to be proud of their journey so far.

"I feel proud and excited to represent the school," said Tu'uaki.

Markle, another rower, added, "I got a lot of good advice. It's really good because we get to experience new things, and not much schools in South Auckland do rowing. I can't wait to do more."

"The vision is to compete at Maadi's and compete at the highest level. We’ve been listening to these Olympians talk about being their best selves both on and off the water, and that’s really just what we want for these kids," said Lanea.

The journey back into rowing has been one of growth, camaraderie, and pride for Ōtāhuhu College. Lanea’s leadership and the support of PMA and PFL have made it possible for these students to imagine a future where they can compete and excel at the highest level.
