Student success soars at Tāmaki College in 2024
Updates / Community , 20 Nov 24
Reflecting on the year, Tāmaki College have created transformative opportunities through their Tereora Academy for Pacific students and their families, achieving significant milestones across key programs.

Among the highlights is the Ahi Kā – Keep the Fire Burning programme, which successfully re-engaged over 80 at-risk youth, equipping them with tailored support for education and employment pathways.

“Our programs connect students with opportunities for further training, entrepreneurship, tertiary study, and soon microcredentials, helping them envision and prepare for their futures,” says Soana Pamaka, Principal of Tāmaki College and Pasifika Futures Board Director.

The College’s Health Science Academy (HSA) has also made an impact, inspiring students to pursue careers in high-demand health fields. In 2024 alone, 12 students committed to health sciences, with seven planning to specialise in nursing disciplines ranging from pediatrics to mental health.

“Our HSA is designed to prepare students for careers in health sciences, and the Academy has proven immensely popular, helping students build essential skills for high-demand work,” Pamaka adds.

Their efforts have extended beyond students to empower Pacific families. Over 200 families participated in workshops on financial literacy, digital skills, and wellness, while three Pacific parents joined the school board, reflecting strengthened community leadership.

Director of the Tereora Academy, Dj Tuaru Temu, speaks highly of the partnership with Pasifika Futures in enabling them to carry out key pieces of work.

"The partnership between Tāmaki College and PFL has been instrumental in furthering the aspirations of our Pacific families and college community by fostering culturally relevant programmes. PFL has helped us create initiatives deeply rooted in the cultural heritage of Pacific families, resonating with our guiding principle, 'as and by Pasifika.'

"Tailored workshops such as financial literacy sessions, IT skills training, driving programs, nutrition and wellness sessions, homeownership support, business enterprise mentoring, and fitness workshops are now delivered at an elevated standard thanks to PFL."

Looking ahead to 2025, Tāmaki College plans to boost attendance with home visits and well-being checks, expand STEM and health science opportunities, and strengthen connections between families and the school. These efforts, supported by PFL, aim to empower Pacific families and students to thrive academically, culturally, and personally.
