PFL Partner Series: Taulanga Ū
Updates / Community , 26 Apr 23
Based in the South Auckland suburb of Mangere is Taulanga Ū, an organisation that stemmed from the Free Church of Tonga. The organisation was established in 2018 with the aim to provide health services and social support to their community that are predominantly within their 34 church branches located around New Zealand.

Taulanga Ū General Manager, Aihaosea 'Ahokovi, speaks positively about the work they get to carry out. He says their goal is to maintain a positive partnership with the churches as most of the communities they serve exists within them.

"The partnership with the church is so important because it connects families to the help that they may need and helps them access support in an environment that is comfortable and familiar."

One of the core aspects of 'Ahokovi’s role is to build up their workforce so that they thrive in their roles. 'Ahokovi shares that the rewarding aspects of his role revolve around the positive outcomes.

"I love seeing the faces and smiles of the people in our community knowing that we are for them. The best part is knowing the people who we look after, we’re helping their livelihoods and their gratitude and attitudes are what bring me joy."

'Ahokovi speaks highly of Taulanga Ū's partnership with Pasifika Futures (PFL) and acknowledges PFL's support of their water safety programme.

Taulanga Ū run a water safety programme for the community which educates participants on how to be at your safest when out fishing or diving. The programme also involves swimming lessons for children and adults. PFL's support means that the programme is made free for participants.

"These lessons are pivotal for summer time where we see a high number of our children drowning.

"We are people of the moana, fishing is a way that we’ve always provided food for our families and villages, so education around water safety is a programme that we are proud to be executing here at Taulanga Ū."

'Ahokovi reiterates the important relationship between Taulanga Ū and PFL and is grateful that they are able to serve their families through Whānau Ora and initiatives like their water safety programme.
