Education is an essential aspect of their work, offering multiple avenues for locals to enhance their education. Additionally, they provide free fitness classes to promote a healthy and active lifestyle within the community.
One of the most significant contributions of Vaimoana Pasifika Charitable Trust was their response to the Covid-19 pandemic. They played a crucial role in providing Covid response packages to families in Taranaki who were in need during that time. Their efforts in this area were recognized and appreciated, where they received a recognition award from Prime Minister, Hon. Christopher Hipkins, for their outstanding service.
“The provision and delivery of Covid response packages around Taranaki has been significant. There was a lot of need for families in the region and through the support of Pasifika Futures we’ve been able to drive out fast responding support to families," says trustee Joshua Robertson.
The partnership between Pasifika Futures (PFL) and Vaimoana Pasifika Charitable Trust is a valuable one. By working collaboratively the trust has been able to host a Taranaki Pasifika Day festival and some student support programmes.
For Robertson, his role with the trust stretches far and wide into many different avenues that cover education, social support as well as responding to health and cultural orientated needs. At present, housing is a huge priority in Taranaki.
“There is a real shortage of Kainga Ora houses and many are not appropriate for families.
“There is also a real shortage of affordable and attainable rentals for families in Taranaki."
Robertson is actively involved in various aspects of community support. His work and that of the Trust have had a positive impact on the community, especially in empowering young people to embrace their Pasifika identity and become more confident.
“I love seeing the Taranaki community flourish and grow, it's super rewarding.
“Seeing the young people become more confident in their Pasifika skin is also one of the most rewarding aspects."
The partnership between Vaimoana Pasifika Charitable Trust and PFL has been instrumental in providing essential support and services to the Pasifika community in Taranaki. The community is grateful for the extra support received during the global pandemic, and the positive impact of this collaboration is evident in the growth and flourishing of the Taranaki community.
"Pasifika Futures play such a significant role in supporting our community work and outreach. They’re a valuable link to other resources around Aotearoa (New Zealand) too. During the covid lockdown periods, this was particularly valuable for us."
