Updates / Community , 4 Apr 24
Over the easter weekend, the Tokelau Easter Festival unfolded in Lower Hutt, Wellington, hosted by the Tokelau Hutt Valley community. The event, held bi-annually, celebrated its 49th year, drawing participants from six regional groups across New Zealand - Auckland, Rotorua, Taupo, Manawatu, Porirua, and Hutt Valley.

The festival's theme, "Ko te Tupulaga a Tokelau, ko te lumanaki o Tokelau" (Our Tokelau young people are the future leaders of Tokelau), highlighted the importance of youth in preserving cultural heritage.

The action-packed weekend included an opening ceremony at Walter Nash Stadium, sports competitions featuring netball, tag, and rugby league, and captivating cultural performances from the regional groups.

Beyond the festivities, the event served as a platform for intergenerational transmission of cultural knowledge and practices. Tokelau Hutt Valley Vice President, Vaka Lemisio touched on the importance of the Tokelau community coming together.

“Everything is passed down from our elders to our youth and children. So now it is on our youth and children to pass it on to our future generations,” says Vaka.

Families reunited, newcomers embraced the Tokelauan culture, and connections were forged across generations.

The Tokelau Easter Festival 2024 reaffirmed the spirit of unity within the Tokelauan community, ensuring that its cultural legacy thrives for generations to come.
