From a life of hardship to now serving Pacific families and communities as a Health Coach, Vave Hifo’s story is one of transformation. His journey is a testament to the power of resilience and the drive to give back.
A proud Tongan and Central Aucklander, Vave was born in Ponsonby and spent his formative years in Grey Lynn, an environment he admits was far from stable.
“Growing up in the hood, I always had older guys ahead of me. We did everything together, and at the time it was a safe space for me, so we started to rebel.
“Not having the support we needed, we looked at other things that made us happy.”
These experiences eventually led him to jail, where he had a pivotal moment of reflection, realising his responsibilities as a father of four.
“It really hit me when I was sitting in Mt Eden jail. I could hear a voice in my head naming my kids, telling me I needed to go home.
“I committed my life to God in 2018, and that was the beginning of my journey to leave the community I was in and overcome my addictions.”
His path to growth and self-improvement led him to discover the Whānau Ora service through Pasifika Futures partner, The Fono.
“I found this programme, Whanau Ora. They supported me and my children, providing clothes, dental care, and even helped with shopping.”
Now, as a Health Coach, Vave finds fulfillment in helping others embark on their own journeys of growth and transformation. He takes pride in serving Pacific communities and, most importantly, in his children's progress.
“The thing that makes me proud today is my children. They've used our past as motivation. Seeing them thrive makes me happy. I’m just a proud father today.”
